Towards psychedelic apprenticeship: Developing a gentle touch for the mediation and validation of psychedelic-induced insights and revelations

The authors argue that psychedelics’ tendency to confer strong noetic feelings can both facilitate therapeutic change and increase risk of iatrogenic harms (e.g. false memories), illustrated across therapeutic, neo‑shamanic and research settings. They propose a pragmatic “psychedelic apprenticeship” framework that emphasises culturally embedded, intersubjective validation and empathic resonance by experienced guides to mediate and validate psychedelic-induced insights.

Overcoming epistemic injustices in the biomedical study of ayahuasca: Towards ethical and sustainable regulation

This commentary (2022) questions the epistemic authority of western medicine in over 30 years of research on ayahuasca. Ayahuasca has long been used by indigenous peoples in countries like Brazil, Peru and Colombia, and the researchers propose new approaches to maintain epistemically fair research and ensure these peoples traditional knowledge and biocultural heritage is maintained. Without adequate regulation, the rights of indigenous people, as well as the sustainability of the Amazon itself, face threat.

Communalistic use of psychoactive plants as a bridge between traditional healing practices and Western medicine: A new path for the Global Mental Health movement

The paper argues that communal traditional rituals involving psychoactive plants should be recognised, protected and integrated as complementary, community-level mental health interventions within the Global Mental Health movement because they foster social engagement, respect local meaning-making and are relatively affordable. The authors further contend that biomedical explanations and recent clinical trials support their therapeutic potential, so international practitioners and advocates should consider these practices alongside conventional treatments.

The socialization of hallucinations. Cultural priors, social interactions and contextual factors in the use of psychedelics

Drawing on ethnography from a Peruvian Amazon shamanic centre and a dialogue with phenomenology and Bayesian social cognition, this paper introduces the "socialization of hallucinations": a two-level account showing that cultural priors and social interactions shape both how people relate to psychedelic experiences and the very phenomenological content of hallucinations via attention training, perceptual categorisation and the shaping of emotions and expectations. It further argues that psychedelics serve as potent vectors of cultural transmission, raises ethical concerns as their use spreads in the global North, and calls for an interdisciplinary methodology to study extrapharmacological factors.
