Prospective associations of psychedelic treatment for co-occurring alcohol misuse and posttraumatic stress symptoms among United States Special Operations Forces Veterans

This prospective study (n=86) evaluated the effects of ibogaine & 5-MeO-DMT treatment on risky alcohol use & PTSD symptoms among US Special Operations Forces Veterans. It found a significant reduction in alcohol use from pre-treatment to 1-month, 3-months, and 6-months post-treatment, and large differences between responders and non-responders in PTSD symptom and cognitive functioning change, suggesting that psychedelic-assisted therapy may hold promise for individuals with complex trauma and alcohol misuse.

Beliefs and Perceived Barriers Regarding Psychedelic-assisted Therapy in a Pilot Study of Service Members and Veterans With a History of Traumatic Brain Injury

In a pilot sample of 21 service members and veterans with traumatic brain injury, brief psychoeducation significantly increased positive attitudes and interest in psychedelic-assisted therapy (PAT), and most participants supported PAT availability in medical settings if proven beneficial. Participants nonetheless expressed health concerns (long-term effects, losing their mind, personality changes) and logistical barriers (time, transport, cost), indicating the need for targeted education, command support and practical facilitation to ensure access if PAT is approved.

A Double-Blinded, Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Sub-Dissociative Dose Ketamine Pilot Study in the Treatment of Acute Depression and Suicidality in a Military Emergency Department Setting

This placebo-controlled proof-of-concept study (n=10, 7 placebo) administered sub-dissociative doses of ketamine to military personnel experiencing depression and suicidal ideation (SI), and found that the ketamine infusion resulted in significant short-term improvement in two out of the three patients who received the drug.
