Health Care Workers’ Attitudes Toward and Knowledge of the Clinical Application of Classic Psychedelics for People with Serious Illness: A Systematic Review

This systematic review of nine studies synthesised health care workers’ attitudes toward psychedelic-assisted therapy for people with serious illness and found polarised views but a general recognition of potential benefits for refractory psychological distress. Most respondents wanted more clinical education and a stronger evidence base, and identified implementation barriers that could be mitigated by team-based care and further research.

The Efficacy of Ketamine in the Palliative Care Setting: A Comprehensive Review of the Literature

This comprehensive review (2019) compared the efficacy of ketamine treatment for pain and depression within palliative care across administration route and dosing regimen. Efficacy of pain treatment exhibited generally inconclusive and mixed results, but studies that administered ketamine either epidurally or intrathecally demonstrated significant analgesia, in contrast, to subcutaneously or intravenous administration routes. Depression was improved across all relevant studies and was sustained the longest during a daily dosing regimen, whereas a single or a multidose did not exert effects beyond 7 days after administration.

Case Report: Ketamine for Pain and Depression in Advanced Cancer

In a case report of a patient with advanced cancer, an intravenous ketamine infusion produced a rapid, dramatic reduction in neuropathic pain and resolution of severe depressive symptoms. This suggests ketamine may be a useful rapid-acting palliative option when conventional antidepressants are impractical due to limited prognosis.

Taking Psychedelics Seriously

This paper (2018) reviews the history of psychedelics as a therapeutic agent and suggests that it is time to revisit this class of drugs as a possible option to alleviate suffering.
