Increased use of illicit drugs in a Dutch cluster headache population

In a cross-sectional study of 756 Dutch people with cluster headache, illicit drug use was more common than in age- and sex-matched controls (31.7% vs 23.8%), and users of psilocybin, LSD, heroin and amphetamines often reported reductions in attack frequency or duration. Whether these reports reflect true therapeutic effects, placebo/expectancy, self-selection or shared pathophysiology with addictive behaviour remains unresolved.

The use of illicit drugs as self-medication in the treatment of cluster headache: results from an Italian online survey

In an Italian online survey of 54 cluster headache patients, a substantial proportion reported using illicit drugs—most commonly cannabinoids, but also cocaine, heroin and psychedelics such as psilocybin, LSA and LSD—for self‑medication after dissatisfaction with conventional treatments. Many sourced recommendations online, often ceased medical care, underestimated legal and safety risks and did not inform their physicians.

The non-hallucinogen 2-bromo-lysergic acid diethylamide as preventative treatment for cluster headache: An open, non-randomized case series

This open-label, case series study (n=6) investigated the efficacy of the non-hallucinogenic LSD-analog BOL-148 (3 doses of 2100µg/70kg) for treating cluster headaches within a clinically diagnosed patient sample. The results show that three single doses of BOL-148 within 10 days can either break a cluster headache cycle or considerably improve the frequency and intensity of attacks, even resulting in changing from a chronic to an episodic form, with remission extending for many months or longer.
