MAPS, the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies, is a U.S.-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit research and educational organization founded in 1986. It works nationally and with a broader global audience to develop medical, legal, and cultural contexts for the careful use of psychedelics and marijuana. Its core activities include research, education, advocacy, and convening the field through large public events.

In psychedelic medicine and policy, MAPS positions itself as an advocate for legal access, drug policy reform, harm reduction, and health equity. Its Policy & Advocacy work includes legislative advocacy, community organizing, and impact litigation, and it has also launched work on access for system-impacted people and broader health equity in the legal psychedelic ecosystem. Current documented initiatives include the Psychedelic Science conference series, the Health Equity Program, The Zendo Project, and Ask MAPS, which handles public inquiries about therapy, research, and policy reform.

Blossom’s read

MAPS is a significant and historically influential player in psychedelic education, but it is not a neutral commercial training school. Its strongest fit is for clinicians, researchers, and first responders who want to learn from the organisation that helped define the modern MDMA-assisted therapy model and who are comfortable with a distinctly MAPS lineage. It sits near the centre of the field rather than on the fringes, though its therapy model and internal practices have also attracted criticism and scrutiny, so buyers should read it as an influential but debated source rather than a universally endorsed standard.

Who MAPS is for

Best suited to mental health professionals, first responders, and curious learners who want MAPS-specific education on psychedelics, crisis response, or therapist development. The deeper therapist education appears aimed at authorised clinicians who can legally provide therapy or conduct research in their jurisdiction.

Prerequisites

For the international therapist education programmes, MAPS says eligible mental healthcare providers must be authorised to conduct therapy in their country or conduct research in an MDMA-assisted therapy clinical trial according to local regulations. The introductory Psychedelic Fundamentals course appears open to newcomers and does not state formal prerequisites.

Accreditation & recognition

MAPS has offered CME/CE credit for some conference-style educational activities, with at least one MAPS CME page stating AMA PRA Category 1 Credits were available through CME Consultants and that psychology CE was co-sponsored by the Spiritual Competency Resource Center. I did not find evidence on the current course pages that the present online courses or therapist education programmes are accredited, certified, or carry formal credit.

Cost

The Psychedelic Fundamentals page describes lifetime access and a full refund if the course is not right for the learner, but the page excerpt I found does not show a price. Older MAPS CME material shows a separate CME fee of $125 for that activity, but that was for a conference education event, not necessarily the current catalogue.

What you walk away with

Learners can expect a MAPS-branded grounding in psychedelic history, science, clinical research, therapeutic uses, harm reduction, and, for professional tracks, the inner-directed therapeutic approach, session preparation, medication, integration, and crisis topics such as touch, suicidal ideation, and transference. The outcome is primarily competency-building and professional orientation rather than a clearly advertised standalone licence or universally portable credential.
