CIIS
Data updated
The California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) launched the world's first university-affiliated Psychedelic-Assisted Therapies and Research Certificate Program in 2015, establishing the gold standard for post-graduate psychedelic clinician training, with cohorts now also offered a B.S. in Psychedelic Studies and a KAP clinic. Based in San Francisco, CIIS is a non-profit graduate university pioneering integral approaches to consciousness, therapy, and psychedelic medicine.
Blossom’s read
CIIS is one of the field’s more established academic players rather than a boutique weekend school: its psychedelic certificate has the advantage of long lineage, university backing and a sizeable alumni network, but it is still best understood as post-graduate professional formation rather than a licence to practise. It seems especially well suited to clinicians, researchers and adjacent professionals who want a serious, culturally literate grounding in psychedelic-assisted therapy, with clear attention to ethics, law and research. The reputation is broadly strong within the field, though the programme’s own materials are naturally promotional, so the fairest read is that it is influential and comparatively rigorous, not magically definitive.
Who CIIS is for
Best for licensed clinicians, graduate-level health professionals, clergy and related practitioners who want structured psychedelic-assisted therapy training. It also now welcomes some unlicensed or pre-licensed applicants with relevant academic or work experience, especially those aiming to become secondary support facilitators.
Prerequisites
Applicants can be an advanced-degree holder, a graduate-level student in a related field, or a bachelor’s-degree holder in medicine, mental health, allied health, social sciences, humanities, sciences, law or related disciplines, case by case. Licensed clinicians, ordained religious professionals and some other professional groups are prioritised; CIIS also asks for relevant statements of experience, and the programme does not require or promote illegal substance use.
Accreditation & recognition
CIIS itself is accredited by WSCUC. The Psychedelic-Assisted Therapies and Research certificate curriculum is approved as a psilocybin training programme by the Oregon Health Authority and authorised by the Oregon Higher Education Coordinating Commission. Mental health trainees and nurses may earn up to 30 approved hours of applicable continuing education credits for an additional fee, or 10 accredited hours of continuing medical education; psychologist CE is provided via the Spiritual Competency Academy as co-sponsor.
Cost
For the 2026 to 2027 cycle, tuition is listed at $9,400 for the hybrid San Francisco cohort, which includes Holotropic Breathwork, and $8,900 for the online cohort. There is a $150 non-refundable application fee, optional extra costs for Holotropic Breathwork and separate Oregon coursework, and need-based scholarships are available but only cover part of tuition.
What you walk away with
Learners receive a professional certificate and a grounding in psychedelic-assisted therapeutic competencies, facilitation, counselling, ethical practice, research protocols and cultural competencies. CIIS says graduates are prepared for advanced clinical work and future FDA-approved psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy research and practice, with many alumni moving into research, clinical trial leadership and facilitation roles.
