Ayahuasca use and improvements in suicidal behavior: An exploratory qualitative study

This qualitative study (n=9) explored how people in Brazil described ceremonial ayahuasca use in relation to suicidal thoughts and behaviour. Participants reported that the experiences helped them strengthen psychological wellbeing and reduce suicidality, particularly in neoshamanic settings.

Perceptions of Australasian palliative care physicians regarding the safety and efficacy of psychedelic medicines: An exploratory mixed-methods study

This mixed-methods survey study (n=93) of Australasian palliative care doctors found that 75% disagreed psychedelics are unsafe and should be prohibited for medical use, and 88% agreed clinical use in palliative patients warrants further investigation, with younger respondents more likely to believe psychedelics may improve outcomes. Twelve follow-up interviews identified themes including openness to innovation, safety, and access equity.

Symmetrical Global Mental Health (Sym-GMH): Ayahuasca and shipibo traditional medicine for lasting changes in personality and quality of life

This prospective longitudinal study (n=264) of Western participants attending Shipibo-led ayahuasca retreats found improvements in quality of life and decentering over 12 months, alongside lower neuroticism and higher extraversion. Most participants reported lasting benefits, and adverse effects were minimal.

An estimate of the number of people with clinical depression eligible for psilocybin-assisted therapy in the United States

The authors estimate that 24% (lower bound), 56% (mid-range) and 62% (upper bound) of US patients with major depressive disorder or treatment-resistant depression would be eligible for psilocybin-assisted therapy under different exclusion scenarios. They find that exclusionary comorbidities—particularly substance and alcohol use disorders and overlapping psychiatric or cardiovascular conditions—drive most ineligibility, and that real demand will hinge on insurance, state regulation and provider availability.
