Practice nondirective, participant-led facilitation

The manuals converge on a strongly participant-led stance. Across the extracts, the therapist or facilitator is described as following the participant’s process rather than steering it, trusting the participant as the authority on their own healing, and intervening only in service of what is emerging moment by moment. They also agree that silence, organic pacing, and participant choice are important, and that suggestions are best framed as invitations, questions, or collaborative offers rather than commands. The sources differ mainly in emphasis and wording. One manual highlights avoiding repeated directive suggestions and warns against alternating neglect with abrupt over-direction, while another stresses using questioning to help participants generate their own solutions and avoiding teaching, advising, or making assumptions. The IMAP manual adds a more explicit clinical qualifier, noting that direction may be used when clinically necessary and that therapists should reflect carefully before intervening. It also specifically names respecting choices about what to engage, pause, or decline, which is stated less directly in the other extracts.
